Nancy Spero is an American painter born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1926. Sbe is a revolutionary woman artist, married to Leon Golub, another artist in 1951. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and like any artist worth her aesthetic weight in lapis lazuli, went to Paris and attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1949/50 shortly after WWII and right after completing her studies in the U.S.
I love her art and her references to classical art. She also instills her work with social commentary and feminist ideology. I will be talking about her art, her philosophy, her changing artist statement and keeping track of what she is doing now though she is fairly old I hope that she is still productive.
Nancy Spero died at age 83 in October 2009. She had great influence on many younger artists, among them Kiki Smith, who I also admire.
